East Hill is the neighborhood most people picture when they picture Christmas in Pensacola — brick streets, deep porches, 1920s craftsman bungalows, and a live oak canopy that has been growing over those roofs for a century. It is also the neighborhood where a generic light package fails fastest, because the canopy hides the roofline from the street.
The oaks are the whole design problem. On most East Hill blocks a roofline alone reads as a thin glow through branches by the time you are standing on the sidewalk. Wrapped trunks and lit limbs are what people actually see, so we look at the canopy before we quote the roof — and on some houses the trees carry more of the display than the house does.
Older houses need older-house methods. Original wood soffits, exposed rafter tails, deep eave overhangs, and half-round gutters do not take a stock shingle clip. Every attachment point is chosen for the surface it is going on, and nothing that leaves a hole is used anywhere on the house.
Porches do a lot of work here. East Hill fronts are built around the porch — columns, rails, and the door frame. Lit garland on those lines is usually what turns a roofline into a display, and it reads from the street even under a heavy canopy.

East Hill questions
August or September. Installations begin October 1, and East Hill fills early — the blocks here decorate together, so once a few neighbors book, the street follows.
Yes. Original soffits, rafter tails, and half-round gutters each get a different attachment method, and nothing that leaves a hole is ever used. Everything comes off in January with the same care.
Yes, and in East Hill it is usually the difference between a nice display and one people drive over to see. Under that canopy, tree lighting is often more visible from the street than the roofline on its own.
